My name is Myra Dayrit

Pronouns: (she/her/siya)

I am a Filipina American first-generation college student. I am the first in my family to graduate college in the States, so my work and passion are driven by becoming a role model for my sister and cousins. Over the course of 3 years, I graduated Magna Cum Laude with my B.A. in Integrated Educational Studies (Communities Emphasis) with a double minor in Sociology and Honors. The IES program played a major role in preparing me to be a culturally relevant and sustaining educator and critical researcher. I additionally have a vast array of experiences working with marginalized student populations.

Currently, I am working on my M.A. in Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University, where I will further my research agenda.

I have research interests in Filipino/a/x American Studies, Post-Secondary Access and Success, Critical Race Theory (AsianCrit and FilCrit), Family Engagement. Throughout my undergraduate education, I was blessed with the opportunity to present my research at six major conferences: AERA 2023, ASHE 2023, APAHE 2024, NCUR 2024, and AERA 2024. Additionally, I have a diverse set of work experiences that complement my research. I had several internships and jobs throughout my undergraduate to help me discover my niche within the field of education. As a first-generation college student, I also work multiple jobs to support myself through school, which explains the multiple food service-related positions listed below.

The following highlights three experiences foundational to my philosophy as an educator. As Lead Research Assistant for Dr. Stephany Cuevas (a faculty member at the Attallah College of Educational Studies who is an expert in family engagement), I gained a strong understanding of the relationships between family engagement, post-secondary access, and success. My roles within the Department of Student Affairs at Rinker Campus and the Orange County Community Housing Corporation (OCCHC) allowed me to apply what I learned in my IES program and research with the surrounding local communities. As Lead Community Engagement Student Assistant at Rinker's Campus Center, I created culturally relevant programming for the 700+ Rinker graduate students. As a SteppingUP advisor for the Orange County Community Housing Corporation (OCCHC), I organized weekly meetings with relevant programs and resources for a caseload of 12 low-income students of color in Huntington Beach.
